| Abstract: | My thesis focuses on the affects the media,
family, and peers have on preadolescent girls in the United
States and their body image. Through library research I
discuss the history of the female body and ideal beauty
models women have faced through recent decades. I focus on
what kind of media images preadolescent girls are being
exposed to today and the process of internalization that
determines one’s body ideal. I discuss family and peers and
focus on the negative influence each has on preadolescent
girls body dissatisfaction. I tie together all three social
influences through two sociological theories, Symbolic
Interactionism theory and Social Comparison theory. Using
both theories, I focus on the development of the self and
the development of ones behaviors and attitudes. I
conclude my research with an overview of how media, family,
and peers can have a negative influence on preadolescent
girls and their body image. |
