Abstract: Interest groups have played a large part in developing public policy and attitudes toward abortion in this country. The pro-choice and pro-life movements have taken different approaches to attracting support from politicians and the public on this controversial issue. They focus strongly on what is referred to as the “mushy middle”, the large demographic that supports legal abortion with restrictions. The pro-life side appeals to the American value of life by emphasizing fetal development and using graphic photos of late-term abortions, whereas the pro-choice side stresses the value of individual choice and keeping the government out of the private lives of citizens. Using library research and personal interviews of two advocates of the pro-choice and pro-life movements, I analyze how effective each side is in reaching the “mushy middle” and how they have affected legislation and Supreme Court decisions on abortion.
