Studies of women and love : Yuan Zhen’s Yànshī : Twenty-Three Translations

Title: Studies of women and love : Yuan Zhen’s Yànshī : Twenty-Three Translations

Authors: Cotton, R. Tyler; Yuan, Zhen d779-831--Poems. Selections.

Abstract: Yuan Zhen 元稹 was a prominent figure of the mid-Tang era. In addition to being a government official, he was an accomplished (one might say famous) writer and poet, counted as a close friend to the well-known Bai Juyi. But while posterity has celebrated the poetry of Bai Juyi, Yuan Zhen’s largely fell out of popularity within a century or so of his death. Today Yuan Zhen is remembered not for his role in mid-Tang political policy, his essays on the contemporary direction of literature, or even his prolific poetry. Instead, Yuan is known mostly for a remarkably controversial chuánqí 傳奇 story: “Ying-ying’s Story”, Yīngyīng zhuàn 鶯鶯傳.2 This short story has been the subject of a great deal scholarly criticism, fascination stemming from its unusual qualities as part of the chuánqí genre and perplexing plot construction.
