Mondrian and De Stijl: A Translation from the German of Hans L. C. Jaffe's Introduction and Three Selected Essays

Title: Mondrian and De Stijl: A Translation from the German of Hans L. C. Jaffe's Introduction and Three Selected Essays

Authors: Selner, Harry L.

Abstract: Hans L. C. Jaffe, born in 1915, studied art history, archaeology and history at the University of Amsterdam. While a student, he came to work for the Stede1ijk Museum, which he left in 1961 as assistent director. After the Nazi invasion in 1940 he was relieved of his post and eventually fled the country in 1942. Between 1944 and 1947 he was an officer in charge of the safeguarding of art works. Since 1963 he has been Professor of modern and contemporary art at the University
of Amsterdam. He remains also the director of the Jewish
Historical Museum in Amsterdam. His numerous writings have been published in Dutch and international publications and gained him considerable prestige as an expert on the art of the twentieth century.
The principal reference works consulted in the execution of the translation were The New Cassell's German Dictionary (1965 edition) and the Wahrig Deutsches W8rterbuch (1968 edition). Even with their invaluable assistance, the translation of Mondrian's articles from de Stijl posed a special
difficulty, due to his complex sentence structures and tendency to use words of his own making. In hopes of clarifying
the matter, a copy of the first of the articles presented here was obtained in the original Dutch from the Stede1ijk Museum of The Hague, but this proved, unfortunately, to be of little avail.

Synthesis and Polymerization with a Cycloaliphatic Epoxide Monomer

Title: Synthesis and Polymerization with a Cycloaliphatic Epoxide Monomer

Authors: Langdon J., Martin

Abstract: Polymers and coatings are an integral part of today's society, and the economical and environmental benefits of cycloaliphatic epoxide coatings make them ideal research subjects in the search for new coatings. The goal of this study was to synthesize a functional monomer that could be used on its own as part of new copolymers, or as an intennediate to the synthesis of larger and multifunctional monomers. The originally desired product was not purified, and no significant evidence as to whether it was synthesized exists, however, certain novel polymers were created and tested.
